JOEL MEYEROWITZ - Sense of Time
The American photographer Joel Meyerowitz counts as one of the pioneers of street photography and - next to Stephen Shore and William Eggleston - as one of the most significant representatives of the American 'New Color Photography' movement since the 1960s.
Next to his early street photographs which he shot both in color and black & white in the early 1960s, he got international attention through his ground breaking series of "Cape Light", in which he presented his achromatic observations of the light with his 8x10 camera. The book is still an icon for following generations of photographers.
A major turning point in his artistic career was using the old wooden Deardorff 8x10 camera at Cape Cod starting in the 1970s. With this static technic he started to study the light as a subject. One of his most wanted subjects are hotel pools around the magic hour. These photographs made in Provincetown or Florida are among his most clearly composed recordings in combination with a distinctive color.
This documentary by art movie award-winner Ralph Goertz reflects the entire artistic development of the photographer and presents very rare insight views and series like "From a moving car", which was exhibited for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1968.
Joel talks about his attitude on the media of photography, the gift of beeing on the street and on nearly every series he has taken in the last 60 years like his photographs from Europe (1966/67), his famous street recordings from the 1960s and 1970s, his series of 'Ground Zero' and his new still lifes, he is photographing at his recent home in Tuscany, Italy since 2012.
Over a period of four years the filmmaker and curator Ralph Goertz, who also curated the first retrospective show in Germany (NRW-Forum Duesseldorf, 2014), was allowed to accompany Joel Meyerowitz in New York City, Cape Cod, Paris, Toulon, Tuscany and Germany.
As Joel said: "This is the best documentary on my work!". Many thanks!
